Underground to Palestine, first published in 1946, is the account of noted journalist I. F. Stone about the hundreds of thousands of European Jews attempting to reach the new Jewish homeland of Palestine following World War Two. With the help of agents of the Haganah, the Jewish military force in Palestine who were arranging this exodus, he traveled with Holocaust survivors from displaced person camps in Germany and Poland on over-crowded trains and on foot, crossing at times unfriendly borders, to southern Europe. From there, Stone joined more than a thousand refugees as they crowded onto an illegal ship, and departed with the aim of defying the British blockade to reach Palestine and a new life as free Jews. Along the way, Stone documented the stories of the concentration camp survivors in this moving story of the human will and the struggle to survive.

An amazing book by an amazing but largely forgotten pioneer investigative journalist. This is not a pro-Israel screed, but rather the story of how a group, devastated by the genocidal actions of European nations, organized and risked all, including the wrath of several European and Arab nations, to bring surviving brethren to a place where they could live, if not totally free from danger and fear, the means and ability to defend themselves. Has any other group since World War II even tried to organize itself like this to protect its similarly endangered members? Perhaps if they fewer tyrants and maniacal groups would feel to run rampant over them.

Interesting historical memoir
A peak behind the scenes of the Aliyah Beth. The writer experienced some of the difficulties the Holocaust survivors faced in their effort to get to Mandate Palestine.
The stories captivated me and how he wove the past and present together just kept me tied to the book. The tragedies in life that crush most, but some come through as a brilliant diamond. The stories that came out of the holocaust makes most of us wish it never happened so that so many other rich lives would have contributed to this earth and people. May they rest in peace, and God's blessing of strength and hope upon those who survived as one of those diamonds.
This is a very good account of the difficulties the Jews suffered right after ww2. To imagine that the Jews built a nation as it is today, in a few decades is astonishing, demonstrating how resilient and strong they are. Very good reading.
This is an in depth story, written by a man who made the journey himself. From Poland to Palestine. These struggles the Jewish people had to undergo is seldom told. One thing stands out there are good are bad people everywhere, independent of race, nationality, political preference.
The books keeps you reading. It is a must read to understand the early phase of the State of Israel.
Brilliant decision by I. F. STONE -- investigative reporter (the mentor of Carl Bernstein as I understand the history) to go to Eastern Europe and find his way by all means possible and some impossible all the way to the then Palestine (Israel) with the displaced persons and documenting the journey for posterity. (b/t/w -- Where are you when we need you Izzy Stone? -- Perhaps you live in the hearts and minds of those who have followed your path without ever having known you.)
Collectively our memories are short with trials and difficulties forgotten when the next "big" thing comes along. After liberation from the Nazi concentration camps the work of starting life again began with roadblock after roadblock to try to stop them. Amazing, strong-willed people.
